24/06/2011 - Medalytix announced as one of the winners in the Smart Solutions for Healthcare Programme

iGradingCVD, the latest new development from Medalytix, offers a new, automated, non-invasive way to assess people’s risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). It does not require specialist staff and provides almost instant results. Medalytix suggests it could cut the cost of the government’s Health Check screening programme for over-40s by up to 35%.

iGradingCVD combines Medalytix’ automated algorithms for retinopathy, used in the company’s first product, iGradingM, with a CVD risk prediction algorithm developed from extensive epidemiological CVD datasets to provide a fully automated means of non-invasively assessing the CVD risk of a person from a simple retinal photograph.

iGradingCVD allows a point of care assessment of cardiovascular risk which would be more accessible to the general population and has the potential to provide a more appropriate and individual assessment of risk, as it is based  on the state of the vasculature in the person.

Smart Solutions for Healthcare is a programme which aims to help the NHS find new ways to combat Cardiovascular Disease and Long Term Conditions. Companies from throughout the UK and beyond submitted their ideas for better, more cost-effective approaches to diagnosis and treatment and the winning products and systems will be evaluated in healthcare settings within the North West in the coming months. iGradingCVD will now undergo evaluation at healthcare sites in the North West of England.

The programme is being delivered by TrusTECH – the North West NHS Innovation Hub, and is supported by NHS North West, NESTA, Northwest Development Agency (NWDA), England’s Northwest, Manchester City Council, Manchester: Knowledge Capital, and New Economy through the Innovation Investment Fund Partnership. The Smart Solutions team will set up and monitor evaluations of the winning products and services in the coming months. Dr Bryan Griffiths, Programme Director, said: “The NHS faces a monumental challenge in the years ahead and new technologies and services will be required to help change the way care is delivered. Smart Solutions for Healthcare has highlighted some of the ingenious potential solutions which are available. All four of the winners provide rapid and simple ways to diagnose long-term conditions in a primary care environment, instead of specialist centres as at present. Not only do they provide significant savings on the initial testing costs, but allowing earlier diagnosis gives scope for more effective treatment and prevention. This in turn ensures better outcomes and savings on longer-term care”.

Dr Joanne Phoenix, Commercial Director at Medalytix said “The Smart Solutions Programme is an ideal way for companies such as Medalytix to get the support needed to evaluate their products with a key customer such as the NHS. We are looking forward to working with the team at TrusTECH and the chosen evaluation sites to establish the value that iGradingCVD can bring to population screening for CVD”.
